Only time will tell.

Blogging will not go away as it's still going to be the primary mechanism for delivering content, but when it comes to getting people to your blog posts I think the social tools are going to overshadow organic listings in google.

Tools like twitter allor you to essentially throw out a "headline" with a link into the global conversation that is happening in real time. It allows you to take maximum advantage of word of mouth.

For instance, yesterday I did a blog post on <a href="http://www.longtailtreasure.com/obama-twitter-acount-hacked-or-given-away/">Obama's Twitter account being hacked</a>.

Using Twitterfeed.com my blog post headline was posted to my twitter account and within 4 hours I had generated over 300 hits to that blog post.

How did this happen? To be honest I'm not 100% sure because I only have a small number of followers (just under 700 at the time of writing), but I suspect my twitter post (tweet) was retweeted, or passed on from some of my followers to their network of twitter followers.

So although I only have a small number of followers at the moment my message can still reach a far greater number of people due to word of mouth effect.

Sure, this was a good example and the post was timely, but that was the point. I can jump into something that's on people's minds right at the critical point and therefore have a vastly greater chance of attracting them with my headline to my blog post.

I can only imagine the amount of traffic someone with 20,000 followers generates in a day to their content.

I'm new to Twitter but I'm yet to be convinced that it will become anywhere as influential as blogging.
