RSS In Plain English Video
By Todd Alan | May 19, 2008
If you’re still wondering about RSS and what to do with it then this RSS video is a great place to start.
When it comes to RSS you’re either a consumer or a producer. Producing basic RSS is pretty simple and often times automated but the site we’re on. For instance if you have a blog you very likely had an RSS feed created by the blog platform. This makes you a producer.
If you use a feed reader (such as Google Reader), or you pull in a feed for a web page (like adding an RSS module in Squidoo, then you are a consumer.
If this is all Greek to you then this video is a great intro to RSS, RSS Readers and the reason why you should be using a reader it to read your blogs. (Think mega time savings and no missed posts from favorite blogs). If you use an RSS reader already then kudos so you and don’t bother with the video
This is just one of the many great intro videos by Lee Lefever.
Now you can do a lot more with RSS than pull blog posts into one convenient location. RSS is a syndication format that lets you use the data for whatever you want. For instance, the Twitter content at the top of this blog is an RSS feed of my Twitter account.
On squidoo there’s the ever popular RSS module lets you (and you should do this) pull in the headlines and portion of your blog posts from any blog. A great way to keep the content changing on your lens by only having to hanged your blog.
In the constant struggle to generate decent backlinks, create traffic and get noticed by the search engines, RSS lets us leverage the efforts we make on one website or social community by sharing that work across all of our web real estate.
So start keeping your eyes open for the RSS feeds provided by your social networks, and other sites and start thinking about how you can use the data to create unique content on your pages and additional search engine recognition.
