Social Power Linking Saved Me From Blogger

By Todd | June 7, 2008

A few weeks ago I did a post about Jack Humphrey’s Authority Black Book which is a very cool resources for those wanting to succeed with social marketing. In this post I want to tell you about how some of the tactics are saving this very blog as we speak!

Silly me, when I first set up the Long Tail Treasure blog back before Christmas I hadn’t read the Authority Black Book and wasn’t really aware of the Social Power Linking Group so in all my wisdom I built a beautifully non-functional (from a marketing perspective) blog at blogspot.com. It seemed easy enogh and hey , a blog is a blog right. WRONG!

Well I’ve since learned my lesson and that when it comes to driving organic listings and traffic from the social networks there really is no substitute for the a Wordpress blog and the vast array of SEO plugins that make Wordpress so powerful.

Unfortunately moving from blogger to Wordpress was nothing short of a crappy experience all the way around and I’ll be changing my lessons to reflect this very shortly. The deal is that if you want to move from blogger (blogspot) there’s no way to do what is called a 301 redirect. This is a special redirect that tells Google that you’ve permanently moved and that they should redirect all the previous link juice and PR you built up to the new location.

Without this little gem you end up having to start over as far as PR and link juice goes. I have seen a few schemes that claimed to resolve this but they only seemed to work when blogger was in beta so I guess they cleverly blocked that hale so there’s no escape!

So as expected, after moving my blog to the one you see here my traffic dropped off like crazy. Sure I had a big message at the old blog telling everyone where to go and of course the rss readers were fine because my feed was burned with feedburned, but none the less traffic still drppped.

I started really digging into the Social Power Linking strategies and I’m seeing my traffic rise again quickly and continuously. Making special use of the remote blogging techniques and following the 60 day plan seems to be putting me back on track and in fact am aiming to surpass what I previously had very shortly.

There is some serious voodoo in some of that there info Jack is passing around and it’s well worth checking out.

Nice job Jack.

It’s all for the better, now with your own domain you are in control.

I have never really understood the lore of the free blogging service.

Todd… thanks for your humbleness and sharing your learning experiences. The distinctions you have made are helping speed up my learning curve.

I just started a 90 Day Journey and wanted you to know that you are a primary inspiration for believing I can do it. Check it out…

Hello again,

I can relate…I made my first ever presence on the web at Blogspot and I get traffic from all over the world. I loaded my site with lots of affiliate marketing products and videos from YouTube and so lots of traffic (for me, *lol*) ;) and low conversions…so I am reading this and learning from my mistakes and your insights…btw, I plugged your blog at twitter a few minutes ago and am adding you to my follow list. Great work!

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the info on Wordpress.org. I have the hosting set up for WP, but not the techie know how to deal with configuring WP. Have you run into any helpful step-by-step tutorials for the layman?

Thanks again,

Suzanne

Hey Suzanne,

Specky boy has put together a couple fantastic lists of wordpress resources that should serve as a great starting point. I’m currently reviewing a bunch of different tutorials and will comment further after I’ve gone through them.

cheers

Thanks for the speckyboy resources, Todd.

I’ve recently resubscribed to your list, so I missed your mailing: “I also want to thank everyone for the literally hundreds and hundreds of emails of support and sympathy that I’ve received after my last mail-out.”

What happened? Everything alright now?

Also, I am looking into subscribing to the Social Power Linking group through your link. Do they have a good WP 2.6 forum for resolving techie issues like getting pretty permalinks to work, etc?

Thanks again for letting me know about WP!

Hey Suzanne,

The speckyboy resource is pretty good. Social Power Linking isn’t really a good place for word press support as it’s more about marketing than support for WP. For WP support forums you should check out the forums at http://wordpress.org/

As far as the other issue goes … unfortunately my father passed away quite suddenly and unexpectedly. So I’ve been sidetracked with that issue as well as taking care of his affairs and estate. It’s a huge task. But all is well and things are getting back to normal. I just have a huge backlog of emails to work though still. ;)

cheers

Glad your utilising the great hints from that book, I can’t believe that it’s only been downloaded 40,000 times.

It has been a real eyeopener for myself as for most people that take the time to open it and utilise it.
