The Vacation That Pays

By Todd | September 1, 2009

I just returned from one of the best vacations of my life and guess what I found when I got home? Another great example of why list building is an absolute must for your business.

I was traveling down to LA for the latest Eben Pagan Guru Mastermind Summit and decided to take an extra few weeks personal time. We did the big tour from Vancouver to Napa Valley, San Francisco, Monterrey, LA for the summit and then to Las Vegas (of course).

Anyway, during the first week we still needed to coordinate some work for a mail campaign that was just launching so we managed to squeeze this in from the hotel room a couple hours a night.

If you’re wondering how a vacation that requires a couple hours of work each day for the first week be considered one of the best vacations I’ve ever had?

Check out the pic below for the results of the mail campaign. The clickbank account shown below is a different account than the one from my previous post and is actually a different campaign all together. (sorry it’s not video like the last one … I was traveling and my laptop doesn’t have camtasia on it so I had to take a screen shot)

This particular campaign was doing on average about $200 per day before the email promotion. We had a very good day on August 13th and the week that followed. As you can see we had a $39K week ending August 19th!

Truth is, it was more like a $50K week from this particular promotion because there was a couple minor upsells that are not clickbank and do not appear here but contributed approximately $10K to the overall promo bottom line.

There are a couple key observations I want to point out in particular.

  1. After about 1 week the sales from the promotional email had dropped off to a minor trickle, but the overall sales have not returned to their previous 200 per day level. Why? Because the email promotion increased awareness of my site and as a result I’m getting more traffic than ever before which is why most of the new sales now are from sources not directly from the email promo. The baseline daily sales for this campaign has now moved from $200 / day to about $500 / day because of the mailing list promotion.
  2. Because of the increased awareness for the site and new increased traffic the promotion has a secondary effect that my list with the starring roll in this whole promotion is now also growing faster than it ever had before. It’s kind of a crazy feedback loop … mailing list promo increases traffic and awareness and in turn makes list grow bigger …. It’s a crazy world.

So you might think this was the highlight of my vacation right?

Nope!

The highlight was without question the Customer Getting Summit in LA which was part of Eben Pagan’s Guru Mastermind program I’m registered in.

What I learned at the Customer Getting Summit a couple weeks ago will easily translate into far more money than the email promotion shown earlier in this post … and that is exciting!

Hi Todd,
Congrats on the big pay day but just wondering is this from an IM list. The reason I ask is I have started a list in the golfing niche about 3 months back and while I have been averaging about 60 sign ups a day I am finding it very very dificult to profit from them.

I am getting great feedback from my subscribers on the info I am sending them but it is alot harder to convert them to paying customers - alllloooooot harder.

All these courses make it seem like a doddle ( maybe in the IM niche, shi*te maybe that is where I should be building my list ) but it is far from it and I know it from experience.

I don’t want to take away from your earnings above and congrats on that but was it to the IM niche you were selling to

Osgar

Hi Osgar,

Thanks or the comments!

Neither this promotion or the one in my previous post were from the IM niche.

In fact I make very little money from the IM niche. The only time I ever mail out to the IM niche is if it’s for a product or course that I’m in myself. Since I’m only use a or are in a handful of programs I don’t email out much to the IM lists.

I know it seems that all the money is being made in IM but that’s just not the case.

The reason people new marketers don;t see all the money being made in other niches is because they’re more likely to be on more IM lists than say … skateboarding, or mountain climbing.

The IM niche is very very competitive and in my opinion not the best place for new marketers to start.

So many people get so tired of the emails they get promoting products that they stop reading them.

This entirely the WRONG thing to do. What better examples of how to interact with your list than from the guys making millions a year doing it.

One thing I do is to make a new folder for each “guru” I come across and then just start filing their emails in the folder. After a while you’ll have a whole library of some of the best email promotion material on the planet … all for free.

cheers,
Todd

Hey Todd - sounds like the way Id like to spend a vacation!!

I find it very inspiring to follow your blog and see how you keep learning and then implementing new tactics and approaching into your business that keep you growing and provide you with more and more stable online income streams.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to online and affiliate marketing. Sure I can code a webpage, set up opt-ins and autoresponders and most of the other basic technical stuff but I’ve been looking into where to start for soo long now that I have what amounts to information overload at this point.

I’m finding it frustratingly hard to pick a direction and just pull the trigger. … especially with all the guru pitches that are even more rampant now - Butterflies, Micro Continuity, CPA, PLR… you NEED this… you CAN’T succeed without that - it never ends!!!

I’m just wondering what advice you would have for someone like me who just wants to start “somewhere” and get in the game.

Cheers mate and keep up the good work.

Hi John,

Thanks!

Eben Pagan talks about “the speed of implementation” which is a principle that the faster you implement or take action on a new concept or technique the faster you learn it and it becomes just another part of your toolbox.

Too often we learn some new concept but tell ourselves “I’ll do something with it later”. Then when later comes around we can;t remember it well and have to either look it all up again or we simply don’t do it.

It’s an extremely inefficient way to learn and grow in any aspect of our lives.

Obviously we can’t always take action on something right away, but as soon as possible is the next best thing.

Also, if it’s something that takes us “off our path” then just don’t do it at all.

The information overload is a problem when building any business online and IM is the worst I’m sure!

So if the new shinny thing you just heard about is completely not going to take you closer to your goal then don’t do it.

cheers,
Todd

Good for you Todd!

There is no doubt that you have to have a list.
And IM list is a good one to profit from, especially these days.
What niches may you recommend beside IM niche to build a list
that will be profitable as much as IM list?

Thanks,
Alexander.

Hi Alexander,

Very good question.

As you know people are making money is almost every niche imaginable … however, if you REALLY want to make a lot of money you need to be sure you stick to one of the 3 main mega niches

1) Make Money
2) Health and Fitness
3) Relationships

IM would obviously fall into the Money niche.

If the niche you are considering is going to solve a problem that falls into one of these 3 niches then you are at least on the right track.

I’ve seen people just starting out trying to sell things like knitting manuals etc …

I’m sure some people are buying, but not a heck of a lot.

Also, think a little laterally too … for instance the money niche isn;t just about making money but solving people money problems … which could include things like credit repair, bankruptcy protection, home refinancing etc…

The trading industry (stocks, forex, options, futures etc …) is always a profitable niche, even in bad economic times.

Also, I think with the aging population there are going to be some huge opportunities for products and services for seniors. You may not think that there are enough seniors online … but their kids are online and who do you think will be taking care of them when they’re 90?

cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,
Well now you got me interested - really interested - that amount of cash from a non IM list - Whew tell me more - yep give us the niche will please - Onky kidding !!.

Can I just ask how big your list is for the Aug 13th payout. Are we talking like 50k in the list or what. I have about 3k in my list now and while I have made about 30 sales of a product - I think a 1% conversion rate sure ain’t great.

The whole thing of how to email properly to your list is not easy to master. I have been sending some great tips to my list and yet I feel I should be getting a much better conversion rate when I send out a soft promotion.

Can I ask what did you do to get such a high payout ?

1. I myself try & not come across one bit salesy and find this works a bit but not easy to do right

2. Would you be able to give a sample of something without giving away your niche about how you went about it.

Osgar

Hi Osgar,

thanks for commenting. The list I had for this was only about 3500. The actual list is longer but I segment my list and never mail to the whole list. This way I always have a hold back group as an email control group. The segment of the list that was mailed to was bout 3500.

It’s hard to sell a lot if you’re not a bit salesy. At the end of the day you have to tell them to buy or they won’t. It’s the call to action.

You simply have to give them so much free information in between the salesy emails that they’re NOT annoyed when a sales email comes through.

It’s not hard to do when you believe in the product because when you believe in your product it’s OK to want to help others with it.

If you target your audience (niche) well and understand their problems they’ll listen to you even when you have a sales email because you’ve built trust. You give them good value and the return.

Regarding a sample of my emails … I don’t think I can do that right now … but there will be plenty of examples in the next release of the course coming shortly.

cheers.

Hello Todd,

Just want to know when the new long tail treasure course will be available.
Another thing if you want to told me how you achieve first google position for learn affiliate marketing.

…and i need a personal advice from you.with that.

I have setup a website a few time ago that promotes a product. Using my seo techniques my website was # 3 in the front page of google for keyword ” product name” and ” product name review” but i still don`t make any money.

What is your advice with that? What I most do -keep in mind that I don`t have an opt-in list.

Can I make money if I DON`T use Google Adwords or another PPC?

Regards,
Octavian

Hi Octavian,

I’m planning to release the new LTT course in about 6 weeks.

The reason I’ve been a little remiss in my blogging here is because I’ve been so busy building a couple other niches to use as case studies in my the new release of the LTT course.

Those case studies are nearing completion and I’m now focused on building out the course so it shouldn’t be long now.

To Answer your question about first place ranking for “Learn Affiliate Marketing” would take more than what I have available in a comment and will be covered in detail on the course.

However I can tell you it has a lot to do with internal linking. Get as many people to firend you as possible in squidoo and favorite you and the internal backlinks will be very powerful.

cheers,
Todd
